Facial Aesthetics – Are you in safe hands?

In the UK, anyone can legally perform facial aesthetic treatments, as there are no mandatory education or qualification requirements. While courses exist, they are not compulsory. Anti-wrinkle injections need a prescription from a medical professional (doctor, dentist, or nurse). However, due to current regulations, non-medical professionals like beauty therapists can administer these treatments despite lacking medical training.

Despite many providers having appropriate training, under-qualified practitioners still offer treatments. Although industry regulations are improving, they are not yet fully implemented. Before any facial aesthetic treatment, ensure your provider is professionally trained and qualified to ensure safe treatment and avoid complications.

Avoid ‘Cosmetic Cowboys’

We fully support the government’s recent announcement to regulate cosmetic practitioners in England. These new proposals aim to protect the public from unqualified individuals offering treatments like fillers and Botox.

Under the new regulations, only qualified health professionals will be licensed to provide these services. There will also be age restrictions to protect under-18s from potentially dangerous beauty trends.

For some time, there has been concern regarding the lack of oversight in the non-surgical cosmetic industry. Health Minister Karin Smyth highlighted the severe harm caused by “cosmetic cowboys.” She stressed that these measures are not to prevent treatments but to ensure public safety by preventing exploitation by rogue operators.

We urge the public to only use registered and qualified practitioners and to ensure that all products used are licensed in England. This crackdown is in response to incidents involving individuals with inadequate training performing high-risk procedures, leading to severe complications, permanent scarring, and even fatalities. These new rules will safeguard people from unqualified operators and reduce the burden on the NHS for rectifying botched procedures.

A safe and clean environment

The concern over unqualified individuals performing invasive treatments in unsafe locations, such as homes, hotels, and temporary clinics, has been increasing. Many of these procedures, while marketed as non-surgical, carry significant risks.

Cosmetic treatments, including Botox, lip fillers, and facial dermal fillers, will soon be subject to a new local authority licensing system. Practitioners will be required to meet stringent safety, training, and insurance standards to operate legally. Once these regulations are in place, practitioners who violate the rules for high-risk procedures will face CQC enforcement and financial penalties.
